The Pyrenees is a long mountain range running between two countries, France and Spain. It embraces multiple regions, and it’s rich in diversity. Each area has precious valleys and unique mountain features, crests, or peaks.

We are located on the west side of the Catalonian Pyrenees, next to the Aragon region and France. Our area, known as the Alta Ribagorça, has its dialect, lifestyle, traditions, and everything tiny valleys have in these latitudes.

Although most of our routes go through the Aiguestortes National Park, we live in an area bordering other provinces. Ultimately, this vast mountainous land is beautiful, regardless of which region it belongs to.

Climbing, hiking, and sharing some knowledge of this territory is why you are reading this.

These mountains, made of granite stone, slate, and schist, have over 200 lakes, creating a wealth of fauna and flora as their waters pass. Sculpted by its glacial origin, with pointed ridges, glacial cirques, hanging valleys, or bucket-shaped lakes, it is well preserved, as it was declared a National Park in 1955.

Catalunya has an extensive net of huts/refuges thanks to an ancient mountaineering tradition. They are strategically located along the Pyrenees to provide warmth and shelter from the weather; some even offer superior service to what you would expect for being out in the mountains. However, no matter which one you reach out to by the end of the day, they are all great places to stay en route.

The interest in high-altitude archaeology is barely 20 years old. Before 2000, archaeological sites in the Parc Nacional d’Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici and it surroundings didn’t exist. But there are more than 370 sites now.

The experts assure that life in these mountains existed and goes back 10,000 years (B.C.E.). Since then, meteorological changes and progress have modified how humans inhabited the Pyrenees, but we still find signs of life at altitudes above 2500 meters. The experts assure that life in these mountains existed and goes back as far as 10,000 years (B.C.E.). Since then there have been meteorological changes, which have modified the way of populating these areas, but still we find signs of life at altitudes above 2500 meters.

Thanks to the work of experts who have dedicated themselves exclusively to this new type of archaeology since then, we can learn what these inhabitants were like and visit the unique sites.
